The great pyramid of Giza held the title of the tallest structure in the world for about 3800 years.
These ancient pyramids were usually built to serve as tombs for pharaohs and their families. To preserve the bodies, they were all mummified.
Because of how they thought about life after death, pharaohs were buried with lots of jewelry, personal belongings and artifacts. This attracted many thieves and was the basis of many stories and movies.
Lastly, because of the sheer size of these massive structures, it is believed that many workers were involved in the building of these structures, as many as 20,000!
The era of the great pyramids came to an end after the death of king Pepy the second. His reign over Egypt was filled with many problems and difficulties. After the death of king Pepy the second, Egyptian kings were never able to reach the glory of the previous kings. As a result, the pyramids they made shrank in size and became smaller and smaller and eventually seized to exist.
